Software instructions.

The Jade and PDF software are state of the art... despite difficulties that may arise in their installation.  We have observed that difficulties can be alleviated/eliminated if a few simple procedures are followed during installation.

1. Most important!!!  Install the PDF4 database first!!!!

2. To install the PDF4, load the DVD, and READ THE README file the pops up. The readme actually contains valid information which goes against all common knowledge.

3. Once finished with the automated install portion, continue installing setup2. With setup2, you are installing 4 seperate programs on that CD... specifically these are the ACCESS, SYBASE, DSN, JAVA folders.

4. NOTE!!! YOU MUST HAVE ALL EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES, USB FLASH DRIVES, ETC. removed from the system before you install these four extra programs.

5. Once completed, open the 2005 PDF-4 program and fill out the registration section.

6. For registration, you need to go to Start menu>Programs, then find PDF4 ICDD 2005, and click "Register ICDD Product" This will bring up this screen.

7. Enter as shown, then click NEXT.

8. Enter in your registration information as shown above (with your name), including the Product Serial Number printed on the label on your CD. Please note that your product serial number may be different than shown above.  You MUST HAVE EMAIL selected as the method by which ICDD will send the registration to you!!!!!

Then click Next.

9. Now, you will need to copy all of the information in this screen and email it to david.tavakoli@mse.gatech.edu.  I will then submit the information to ICDD, and they will shortly thereafter (perhaps a day) send you a registration number which will allow you to continuously (up to a year) use the ICDD PDF4 product.

Now, Moving on to the Jade installation.

Note: Jade 9 is available now. Follow the instructions for Jade 7.5 below for Jade 9 installation.

This is the first window that should pop up when you insert the Jade 7.5 CD.... click "I accept" to continue.

1. Make a note of the IP address printed on the Jade CD.

2. after you click "accept" a new window pops up, select "net client" and type in the IP address in the window that says "License Server" or just type it in as shown below.  The license for the Jade software is stored on a separate computer. We currently can have four concurrent users.

4. Continue with the automatic installation.

Setting up the PDF to work in Jade.

This is important... otherwise it's just an expensive piece of software that won't be of much use to you.

1. When in Jade, click on PDF, then scroll down to setup... you should get this window...

2. at the top of this screen, click the arrow and choose RDB-PLU2005 as the database as seen here...

3. Now, all you have to do is click on "create" and sit back and enjoy your favorite movie. Unfortunately, yes. What Jade is doing at this point is creating "index" files of each database entry so that it can read and act quickly, instead of having to read off the CD each time it makes a query. Seriously... it may take over an hour.

A word about Jade 7.5's help file...

The Jade help file (obtained by clicking F1 at any time in Jade), is EXCELLENT!!! However, accessing the help file and moreover searching through the entries is laborious, and many people have been complaining about this. It's clearly not ideal for easy use, but here's a tip which can make it work for you (instead of the other way around).

1. Download the free program CutePDF... install it.  This program will act as a new "printer", thus, now when you're in Jade, or any other program for that matter, you can use CutePDF as a printer and print to a file instead of making a hardcopy.  This is VERY useful when it comes to Jade as it will allow you to open your newly created "printout" in Adobe Acrobat and actually search for keywords instead of just scrolling through the whole Jade helpfile.

2. in Jade, choose File>print setup, and choose the CutePDF writer as your new printer.

3. In Jade, hit the "F1" key on any help topic... here is an example of a Jade help file.

4. now go to "File>Print Topic" and print the file, make sure to save it as something you remember....

5. Open the new PDF file using Adobe Acrobat and search away!
